Hulstein Brothers Inc.: Generations of Progress
Nestled in the heart of Sioux County, Hulstein Brothers Inc. is a testament to decades of family dedication, innovation, and generational commitment to dairy farming. Established in the 1950s by Steven and Hermina Hulstein, the dairy began with a modest herd of 30 milking cows in a tie-stall barn, with milk stored in cans. In the 1980s, Steven and Hermina passed the farm to their son Glenn and his wife Marj, who introduced pipeline milking and a double-six parlor. Their four sons—Dan, Jeremy, Josh, and Chris—spent three decades working together on the family farm, until the operation became Hulstein Brothers Inc. under the ownership of Josh and Chris in 2010.

Since then, Josh and Chris, along with their wives, Kaylee and Ashley, and their children, have expanded the herd to 300 cows and significantly modernized the operation. In 2021, Hulstein Brothers implemented their first four Lely robots, which now handle the milking for 240 of the cows. In early 2024, the family installed a fifth robot, fully transitioning away from manual milking and closing their parlor system. “We felt Lely robots were the best fit for our farm,” said Kaylee Hulstein, who noted the positive support from Gorters Clay & Dairy Equipment in Pipestone, MN. She adds, “Dairy farming is always evolving, so this felt like the next best step for us as young dairy farmers with ‘day jobs,’ our cows, and our sustainability.”
With the robots in place, daily labor requirements have decreased, allowing for enhanced efficiency and improved productivity. Each robot can milk around 60 cows daily, helping streamline operations and ensure optimal animal care. Since making the switch, Hulstein Brothers has seen a boost in milk production, showcasing the positive impact of robotic technology on both cow welfare and farm sustainability. Beyond their dairy operation, Josh and Chris also serve as hoof trimmers for nearby dairies, underscoring their commitment to supporting the local dairy community.

Reflecting on their journey, the Hulstein’s take pride in their generational farm, strong work ethic, and the quality milk they produce. “We are proud to be generational farmers and take pride in the quality of our milk, our animal care, and our stewardship of God’s land and resources,” shared Kaylee. As they look to the future, Hulstein Brothers Inc. stands as a model of resilience, sustainability, and progress—paving the way for future generations of dairy farmers.
