Fertig Farms: A Legacy of Growth and Quality

Farm History

Located near Wall Lake, Iowa, Dale and Sharon, and Chad and Kayla Fertig own and operate their dairy. The Fertig family dairy began its journey in 1941 when great-grandfather Laverne purchased the farm. Since then, the family has worked diligently to expand and modernize their operations. Dale Fertig introduced the first pipeline, which was a significant upgrade, and later constructed a milking parlor.

After attending Iowa State University, Dale’s son, Chad, returned to the farm and took another step forward in 2013 by building a new facility. The farm has continued to evolve, producing high-quality milk while growing all their own forages and corn needed for the dairy. In addition, they raise and feed out all their steers and beef animals. Today, the dairy milks approximately 200 cows, and the family takes great pride in their work. Sharon and Dale primarily handle milking duties, while Chad oversees all the feeding. Kayla assists with moving calves and general farm maintenance when she isn’t substitute teaching.

Passion for Dairy Farming

The Fertig’s find great joy in producing high-quality milk that is transformed into delicious cheese. Watching their heifers grow into strong, productive cows is one of the most rewarding aspects of dairy farming. They have also been a proud AMPI patron for over 40 years and have received a milk quality award for the last 12 years. Additionally, they appreciate the diversity of their work—no two days are ever the same. Lately, the excitement surrounding cattle markets and raising beef crosses has added another dynamic to their operation.

Words of Encouragement for Fellow Dairymen

The Fertigs have always embraced a positive mindset, surrounding themselves with like-minded, high-energy individuals. They believe in setting small, achievable goals, celebrating small wins, and building upon those successes. This strategy has helped them stay motivated and continuously improve their operation. Currently, they are focusing on increasing heifer pregnancy rates, with the hope that this will lead to higher first-lactation success rates.

The Fertig family remains dedicated to dairy farming, honoring their legacy while embracing innovation and growth for the future.
