Hickory Hill Farms: A Five-Generation Legacy in Dairy
For over 130 years, Hickory Hill Farms has been a cornerstone of dairy farming excellence, built on tradition, innovation, and a deep commitment to sustainability. Located in Hospers, Iowa, the farm is now proudly operated by the fifth generation of the Meissner family—Scott and Steve—who continue to uphold their family’s legacy in the dairy industry.
A Legacy Rooted in Dairy
The Meissner family’s dairy journey began in the 1890s when William Meissner established a farm in Sussex, Wisconsin. His son, Fredrick, joined the operation in 1929, marking the first of many transitions toward modernization. Together, they moved from hand-milking and milk cans to using a bulk tank, reflecting their commitment to progress.
In 1958, Fredrick’s son, Daniel, entered the family business, helping to expand the herd to 100 cows, all milked in a traditional stanchion barn. By 1982, the Meissner family incorporated Hickory Hill Farms, further growing their operation to include 250 cows milked in an 18-stall Triagon.
The biggest milestone came in 2002 when Hickory Hill Farms relocated to Hospers, Iowa, setting the stage for significant growth. Today, Scott and Steve manage an impressive herd of 6,000 Jersey cows, milked in parallel parlors. The farm also produces corn silage to support its operations, ensuring a well-balanced and sustainable approach to dairy farming.
Innovation and the Future of Dairy
Scott and Steve are passionate about the evolving dairy industry, particularly the ability to convert carbohydrates into high-quality fat and protein. They also find excitement in seeing younger generations enter the field, bringing fresh ideas and challenging conventional wisdom with innovative technologies.
Their focus on the future keeps Hickory Hill Farms at the forefront of dairy advancements. From improved efficiency in milk production to sustainability initiatives, they are dedicated to balancing tradition with cutting-edge solutions.
Words of Encouragement
Throughout their years in dairy, Scott and Steve have embraced a philosophy that has guided their success: “Givers Gain.” They believe in being the kind of people who give to others, knowing that generosity and a willingness to help the community will always come full circle.
As they look ahead, the Meissner family remains committed to producing high-quality milk, protecting the environment, and fostering a thriving dairy industry for generations to come.
